It has not always been the case, but you can grow genuinely good peaches in Vermont these days.
A decade or so ago we took a chance on milder winters and planted a peach tree. This is Vermont, remember, not Georgia. It worked. The harvest now comes in every year — the highest fruit reached from a bucket loader, the rest picked by hand, and a good share of it turned into cobbler before the day is out.
The same thing that makes the lower Champlain Valley good for grass makes it good for fruit: a longer, milder season than most of the state gets.
